Dear Sarah,
I tried to make a comment somewhere on your website, but I couldn't find a way to get a
message to you - hence, this letter.
I competed against the top 60 dogs of Southern California in obedience when I was in my early 20's and had my first standard poodle.. .1 am now 60 and on my third standard -and find that I don't remember the puppy stuff I once knew!
We are moving to the country of Panama, and I got a new standard puppy last week, so I can move into old age with another wonderful dog. (brown and white.. .so cute!) I was flying by the seat of my pants.. .but after 5 piddles in the house yesterday, I ran to the library and checked out 6 books on dog training!
Yesterday afternoon, I sat down with Puppies for Dummies - and just HAD to write and
thank you for that book! It is like night and day between yesterday, with Maggie running through the house driving me mad, and today where she has been at her stations, being a perfect angel - like a baby cooing in its playpen. I am SO GRATEFUL!
We got her at 8wks, and have had her one week today. She walks on her leash, comes when she's called, she fetches a ball and brings it back and drops it in my lap....REALLY smart, as standards are.
I'm thrilled to understand the idea of hands and pushing being play.. .1 have kept returning to pull her out of a hole at the back of the yard where a sprinkler used to be, and she leapt back into it each time. Today I corrected twice with the leash and she has not returned. (I put some poop in it as well.. .that helped!)
I've ordered your books off Amazon, and will take them to Panama, to keep me on track. I have suggested the poodle breeder give your book to every new puppy owner, and I'm sending copies to my nephew who has a new standard puppy as well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Blessings to you,
Amanda Rankin

Dear Sarah,
I can’t thank you enough for all the help you’ve brought us!
Eight years ago, we got a German Shepherd puppy we named Jake. As it had been many years since I had raised a puppy, I was happy to find your book “Idiot’s Guide to Choosing and Raising a Puppy”. The practical advice, common sense tips, and understanding of “doglish” made our lives so much easier. Step by step, you guided us through a virtually stress-free puppyhood. Jake grew into a well-mannered, happy adult dog. Sadly, he had many health issues, and we had to let him go last year.
It took almost a year before I was ready to commit to another puppy. Once I’d made the decision, I immediately referred back to your book. Because Jake had been raised using your teaching lead, I was anxious to get another. I was thrilled to find your web site! Immediately, I ordered the new teaching lead and several other training tools, as well as some of your newer books.
Fritz, our new German Shepherd puppy, is coming along quite nicely. The lesson plans in “Puppy Perfect” have helped tremendously, both in helping us understand what to expect and what is age appropriate to teach. “Puppies for Dummies” is also a constant reading companion. Once again, I have found the straightforward language and your understanding of dogs invaluable. Already, many of our neighbors comment on what a well-behaved puppy Fritz is! When we started obedience, it was clear that Fritz has been getting “home schooled”. He is a star pupil, which makes us proud and his instructor very happy.
Thank you so much for guiding us to be better “parents”. I’m sure the puppies would thank you as well.

"The methods in the book are invaluable. I'm going step by step: bath time with peanut butter, humane methods of correction, etc. Thanks again for making me & puppy calmer during our first adjustment period. I'm looking forward to watching the "lead method" in one of the 2 videos in my order. Your book and website has saved my sanity! "

"There is so much information out there about dogs and breeds that it can be
overwhelming! That is until I picked up your book on Puppies for Dummies."

Sarah,
Just wanted to thank you for Puppies for Dummies. We bought it last week.
Willow is 10 weeks old. A German Shepherd who may be smarter than us. Another
reason for not having children when your over 50. We are picking up many
tips. We will also start Kindergarten tomorrow. Thank God. This book is very
helpful. Have recommended it to several friends. Thanks again. Guess I had
better start reading. She is taking a nap.
Sig and Susan Bodman. And of course Willow.

Sarah,
I just wanted to send a short note to tell you that I recently ordered the
seat belt safety lead for my Lab and I absolutely love it! I no longer have
to use cumbersome crates or safety bars. Plus, it doesn't matter what kind
of car you have as long as it has a back seat.
Thank you!!!!!! It was money
well spent!!!!!

Sarah,
A month ago I adopted a 4 month old Boxer mix from a shelter. When I got her, she had normal puppy tendencies, but unberable ones. I knew Storm wasn't bad, just a puppy, but I needed help. I ran out to the store and bought your book,Dog Perfect, two weeks ago mostly because it looked like the easiest read and it didn't use food as a training element. I ended up being very grateful that I picked your book. I am already amazed at how well my puppy has responded and know that as I work with her she will improve even more.
Thank you very much,
Julie
I want to thank you for helping me so much with my new puppy, I have a 15 week old lab, and I got your books puppies for dummies and dogperfect, as soon as I got her home I started using the teaching lead method, (I rigged my own for now), she is already housebroken, dependably so, she sits, waits and settle's down on command, she is so attentive that she is a complete joy to have around, we're working on heel, she can stay briefly already, I also use the clicker for more formal training sessions, 2-3 times a day for 5 to 10 minutes, training has never been so easy!
I have 2 very spoiled Shih Tzu's that I am also starting to work with, they are quite a bit older and unfortunatly I got them before I got you! thanks again for a couple of wonderful teaching resources, I've recommended your books to a lot of people at the hospital where I work, and everyone loves your methods!
thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!

"We just watched your video "Puppy Perfect" and were so surprised
by what we heard. My husband Kevin is the guy who wrote and
performed the music played throughout your video! It is the title
song from his album "Traveler." His music shows up in some
of the darndest places!
Thanks for all the wonderful puppy/dog info and training materials
you offer. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of an Australian
Shepherd Mix puppy (Daisy) on May 5th. With the help of your
books (we've already read "Puppies for Dummies"), videos
(we've watched "Puppy Perfect" and "Dog Perfect") and
all your different kinds of training leads (we just ordered them all!)
we should have a good head-start on having a well-trained dog."
Thanks so much-

We are in Blacksburg VA and are the proud (and frazzled) owners of a brand
new Jack Russell Terrier.
I started reading your book the day before Hoover came home and have just
read it over and over again. I love it! It is so well written, extremely
helpful and humorous! Sometimes I feel like you have a video camera
installed somewhere in the house because you hit so many of our
"challenges" right on the head. The greatest compliment that I can pay you
however is this: The other night I couldn't find my "Puppies for Dummies"
book. I was frantically searching for it when I went into my children's
bathroom and found it on the back of their toilet. My nine year old
daughter hates to read but she and I fight over your book! What a hoot. I
hear her telling her 7 year old sitter direct quotes from the book and
yelling to her sister "look for rain! Look for rain and he'll leave you
alone!" You are the greatest. I'm going to visit your web site shortly
and buy a teaching lead and some other cool stuff.
Thank you for having this calling in life! I know you must have helped
millions over the years, now it's millions plus four! (I only wish you were
close enough to take classes from!) Ever thought of visiting Virginia?????
;-)
Can't wait to read the rest of your books!
Kathy, Leaman, Caroline and of course "Hoover"
Courtney & Teddy Bear and I are doing well. The dogs are so enjoyable that
my friend and I took them on the 5 mile breast cancer walk in Westport, CT.
We even made the News. They were so well behaved, happy and a real joy to
have around even in the crowd situation. Using your leashes, my friend and I
almost forgot they were there. That's how good they were.
We send our best to you and wish Happy Holidays.

"I have been instructing classes, showing and training for over forty years. I read every book on training dogs that hits the market. I love your books. They make such good sense. Right now I'm
instructing the Seattle King County Obedience classes and I'm going to introduce your book and your methods..."

I have a 2 year old husky, and a 9 week old husky. I have been told since the day I thought about getting a husky that they are impossible to train, I'd never succeed in making him sit. In one week of
clicker training my 2 year old, I have taught him to sit, down, up, come, roll over, shake, high five, kiss and dance. It's absolutely amazing, and I did this all using the methods in Sarah's book Idiot's Guide
to Fun and Tricks. I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything he can't learn. I noticed that Sarah has a husky, as I'm sure some of the rest of you do, and I was curious as to what tricks huskies are
better at learning, and which I should probably leave out. I know all dogs are different, regardless of breed, but I'm having so much fun doing this, I'd like to know what would probably be more fun for
him. As for my 9 week old husky, I'm going to start training her when she gets a little older. For now, she just gets to be a puppy!

Unlike any other trainer I have know, Sarah Hodgson's genius lies in the way
she uses her compassion and insight to enlarge the vision and understanding
of the people whose dogs she trains. A born teacher, she connects with all
that is most human and vulnerable in her clients, and illuminates her unique
and canny understanding of the inner world of dogs. Firmness without anger,
respect, detachment and love define the methods of this extraordinary guru.

"I am STUNNED at how quickly our puppy has become house-trained, well-behaved, and a complete joy to be around after applying your training methods. She is calm, affectionate, and lies happily at
her stations chewing on a chew toy when we're otherwise occupied. Our friends are amazed...Thanks so much for your incredibly effective and humane teaching method."

Puppies for Dummies as been a godsend-we brought home our miniature Dachshund puppy home at 8 weeks and have made it to her 13th week. We wouldn't have made it this far without your terrific
insight and advice. Our "little girl" Ruby, has been alternately a joy and an exasperation, just as your book predicted. While everyone must say this about their dog, I am amazed at how smart she has
already nailed several commands and her chewing/nipping is fast coming under control.

"I recently bought your Dogperfect training book. I LOVE IT! It is a true miracle worker."

"I would, first of all, like to congratulate you on your book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fun and Tricks with your Dog! It's about time someone wrote a clear, concise manual for having fun
with your dog. I love your sense of humor and all the tips and factoids you add to the text...We are discovering new talents I did not know he [the dog] possessed like tracking, service, and agility! With
a little imagination the possibilities are endless! Your book has helped transform a pesky, bothersome pup into a happy, productive companion. Thank you, Sarah!!"

I would like to share with you my experience of training my huge dog with
Sarah Hodgson. Sarah's training, both in the classroom and privately, is
brilliant and unique. She has a very compassionate approach to the dog as
well as the person, and the training can be customized to address your dog's
individual need. It all makes so much sense!
Our year and a half old yellow lab, Jack, was becoming very aggressive
toward men, especially when I had him on the leash. This was a panic
situation for me because at 90 lbs., I was afraid I would never be able to
control him or stop him from hurting someone. Sarah came to our home, and I
started the classroom training as well. What she immediately realized was
that I had made Jack feel like he was the head dog in our pack and he had to
protect all of us. Being the kind, good natured soul that he was, this was
not a role he was comfortable with or one that he was even good at. We
started him with the gentle leader training collar and the waist leash, and
he was attached to me at all times in the house for about 2 weeks straight.
This really taught him that I was controlling him and he was not controlling
me. There were other things to do as well, which worked very quickly and
effectively, and less than 2 months later, Jack is no longer being aggressive
toward men or anyone for that matter, and he is a much better-behaved dog.
If you really listen to her, do everything she tells you to do, and remain
consistent, you will have a great dog, and a wonderful relationship with your
pet! Her methods are what makes the training different, and it really becomes
second nature for you and your dog. Sarah's training really changed all of
our lives, and now our dog is just so happy!

"I perused the shelves at the local Barnes & Noble, and your book appealed to me more than any other, so I bought it. For weeks, I read sections of it at night to my daughter (seven), and we practiced
commands and did some pretending for what-if situations...Every single thing you suggested has worked...Your advice is really uncanny. I sometimes wonder if she read your book before she came
here. Thank you so much for your invaluable help!"

Hi Sarah,
I've been meaning to write for weeks now, but you know, life...
Anyway, Passover...
Stationed Hershey in the dining room (a new environment for her since she's
not allowed to hang out there under normal circumstances). She knew what was
expected of her and put her head down and went to sleep!
Took Hershey to Mitchell's baseball game last week. Lots of commotion and
little kids petting her and in her face. She flipped on her belly and let
them pet her and not a single growl. She sat at my heel and went to sleep.
I couldn't resist, picked her up and let her finish her nap in my lap.
The next day it was the soccer field. Bravo, again.
Yesterday a two mile walk to practice heel and keep me company while I train
for my breast cancer walk. She crossed my path only twice and was a
pleasure.
Yes, we're having fun now and I can't thank you enough. A trained dog is
much more pleasant to have around, and while we have miles to go and much
more to learn, we're off to such a good start and I have you to thank. So,
THANKS. See you Wednesday.
Lanny Becker
"Just wanted to write with words of thanks and tell you how impressed I was with you the other night when the black lab got loose and ran out the door of the Historical Hall. I heard you yell 'down'
(like the lord was separating the great seas) and then I saw you run back to the rest of your waiting students in the building. . .so I knew it worked. This is a pretty amazing lesson to be learned, it is
experiences like this that make a difference, and you are making a big difference for all of us in your classes. Thanks."
Lindzay Green, Katonah, New York
"Thank you, thank you, thank you.
After the death of my dearly loved dog Coco two years ago, I had come to the conclusion that I would never again be a successful dog-keeper. I couldn't seem to find the "right" dog or to conquer training difficulties. Yet I dearly wanted a dog to share my life with.
A couple of months ago, I bought Puppies for Dummies and have been reading and studying it since then.
A week ago I brought home Rose, a 3 month old Maltese puppy. With the help of your book, I selected a breed that seemed a good fit for my life and more importantly, Rose's temperament seemed right. She was more mellow (a middleman of her litter I think) and had apparently been passed over by others who chose the more active of her littermates.
With my preparation from reading Puppies for Dummies, I was better trained from the start in how to interact with Rose and already MY training is paying huge rewards in training Rose. Obviously, we have a long way to go together, but that is the wonderful part--we are together and will be together for a long time to come. What a joy she is!
So thank you for having written Puppies for Dummies. Most of all your helpful information and advice are proof to us dog lovers that we aren't dummies. Rather, we, like our puppies, just need training (and love and patience)."
Janice Henderson, Honolulu, HI
"I used your book "Puppies for Dummies" to train little Bailey, and it worked amazingly. I had tried so many other books, but
none of them explained why puppies to the things they do. After reading your book, Bailey and I found ways to understand each other and our house was much more peaceful. He's the cutest little thing in the world and extremely well behaved thanks to your help!!! Thanks for that! My two cats really appreciate it as well!"
