New Year's Resolutions for My Puppy
- I will have patience with my puppy.
Puppies are just babies, they won't understand yelling and frustration. Having patience with your pup is very important for his development.
- I will not chase my puppy around the house when he's grabbed my slippers.
Chasing only encourages prize envy - your pup thinks that you must really want what he has, therefore will make a game out of your frustration. This could lead to aggression in the future, so remember to call your dog cheerfully and offer a treat for the returned object. Better to have a delivery system than a destruction crew!
- I will give my puppy plenty of exercise and playtime.
Adequate exercise is essential for developing puppies. Take your pup for daily walks and play fun indoor games throughout the day.
- I will allow my puppy to get plenty of rest.
Nap-time is just as important for a growing puppy.
- I will only say commands once.
Repeating a command such as "Sit" or "Down" makes a whole new term. "Sit-Sit-Sit-Sit" sounds much different to the pup than "SIT."
- I will stand up straight.
Stand tall to show your pup who's boss. Leaning over when giving commands only encourages play and teaches your puppy that you're looking to him so he doesn't need to look to you.
- I will remember that when my puppy's nipping and being persistent he is probably communicating a need.
Puppies are very much like babies. They have basic needs and their way of telling you is often through nipping or whining. The four basic needs are eating, eliminating, exercising and sleeping. Watch out for signs that your puppy may need one of these things!
- I will teach my dog what I expect him to know.
Puppies need direction - sometimes it's hard to not expect them to know what to do. If your pup seems confused, guide him with patience and understanding.
- I will provide chew toys for my teething pup.
Teething can be rough on your puppy. Make sure he has plenty of safe toys to chew on to relieve some of this stress.
- Most importantly, I will love my puppy and take care of him to the best of my ability.
